Royston & District
Model Railway Club

18 Sept 1

The layout is based on a fictitious town in Wisconsin USA. The era is flexible but is usually set in the 1980's.

Rock Ridge is now a terminus, but the line originally continued onwards. Passenger service is provided by Metra, the commuter rail system for the Chicago region.

The town has a variety of industries including a wood yard and metal salvage company.

Freight trains arrive from time to time, and service the industries. Switching (shunting) of cars (wagons) is usually performed by a loco based at Rock Ridge.

Structures are either "Kit-bashed" or scratch built with added details and lighting. Many of the extra details are designed and 3D-printed "in house" by a club member.

The layout is made up of four baseboards which occupy an area of 16' x 2' and is normally operated from the front and rear by a minimum of two people.

Loco operation is by DCC and most are sound fitted. The track is Peco code 83, suitably weathered.

The points are operated using servos (commonly used in radio controlled cars and aircraft) via a small programmable micro controller. The low-relief buildings along the rear of the layout cover apertures in the back-scene through which the operators can move the points.

Back scenes have been created by editing images of the Wisconsin area.

The layout is still unfinished; the yard area beyond the silos is being worked on, amongst other items.
